Awards Night 2009

Parents, family and friends joined us in celebrating the many accomplishments our club members achieved over the course of the past club year.  Our Youth of the Year, Dominique Bynum was acknowledged for his scholastic achievement and service to the club. 

Basketball Season 2009

Boys Basketball team Bulls, Lakers, Magic and Heat along with Girls Basketball teams Sky and Sparks played hard and learned the true meaning of team work this past season.  Boys & Girls Championship team winners celebrated their success with a pizza party.  They received trophies and medals for their participation. 

 

Earth Day 2009

The Disney Stores celebrated Earth Day with our club members this year.  Club members decorated cardboard squares with Earth Day friendly designs and slogans.  Each square was added a to a mural that was placed on display at area Disney Stores.

 

Spring Break 2009

Club Members enjoyed a variety of activities and field trips during spring break. 

 

FLAG FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS!!!

Parents, family and friends showed up for the Championship Flag Football games. Each team celebrated their successful season with a pizza party provided by parents and staff. Everyone involved enjoyed the time spent together laughing and sometimes crying about the ups and downs of Flag Football.

DECEMBER 2008

Mu Xi Chapter of Omega Psi Fraternity Inc. surprised club members with gifts during the holiday season.   

 

NOVEMBER 2008

Torch club members were very interested in the 2008 Presidential Election so they decided to host their own Mock Election at the club.  Prior to the Election Torches provided each voter with information on both candidates. 

   

   
 
OCTOBER 2008
 
Club members, parents and community members participated in an open forum as we discussed ways to identify and combat bullying and cyberbullying.  The event was sponsored by the Illinois Violence Prevention Authority.
 
 
 
 
 
SEPTEMBER 2008
 
Club members participated in Nickelodeon's World Wide Day of Play.  For two hours children across the U.S. were asked to put down their PSP and Ipod and participate in a fun physical activity.  Club members ran relay races, jumped double dutch, shot free throws and played musical chairs.   
 
AUGUST 2008
 
Club members ended Summer Camp with a "Summer Splashdown".  They were treated to a day in the sun with water games, including the Moon Jump water slide and water balloon toss.
 
  
 
JULY 2008
 
The Warm2Kids Organization & Glenn "Doc" Rivers of The Rivers Family Foundation, presented our club with a state-of-the-art Learning Center.  Our lab is equipped with (10) Lenovo Computers w/flat screen monitors and (2) Laser Printers.  Representatives from Warm2Kids and The Rivers Family Foundation were on hand for the Grand Opening. 
 
  
 
JUNE 2008
 
At our Annual Walk-a-thon, club members that are part of our Peer Health Education Team, sponsored by the University of Illinois EXTENSION program, set up a booth where they presented information regarding the negative effects tobacco and other drugs have on your body.  
 
  
 
MAY 2008
 
During Awards Night we recognized those club members that actively participated in a variety of programs throughout the year.  Awards were presented in areas the of academics, arts, character & leadership, technology and sports.  We also recognized our Youth of the Year.   
 
              
APRIL 2008
 
Our club was invited to participate in the Hillside Athletic Parade.  Club members enjoyed seeing the local High School band and various sports teams in the area.
 
 
MARCH 2008
 
During National Boys & Girls Club Week, Torch Club members conducted a Food Drive to benefit the local Food Pantry.  They posted fliers at homes in the neighborhood requesting that canned goods be left for collection.  With the help of the community, members were able to donate over 100 cans of food. 
 
 
February 2008
 
Club members participated in their Annual Black History Program.  African-American Inventors were recognized on that evening.  With the help of our Art Instructor, club members recreated the traffic light (invented by Garret A. Morgan in 1923), the dust pan (invented by Lloyd P. Ray in 1898) and the mop (invented by Thomas W. Stewart in 1893). 
 
January 2008
 
In celebration of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, club members and parents participated in the International House of Blues Foundation's Annual "Spirit of the Dream Celebration."  Participants were taken on a journey through time with the story telling of Mama Edie an African storyteller.  They also listened to a musical presentation about the history of the blues and blues inspired music from the Chicago Blues School House band.
